Top 4 Safety Tips for Crane Operators
1. Ensure you carry out proper maintenance of the hoist
The key to safety is the regular maintenance of the hoists. You need to perform a load testing maintenance to help you know the maximum load that your crane can handle. Maintenance should not be considered as optional; it is mandatory. If any moving part of the hoist wears out, gives out or breaks, it can cause severe damage. Thus, regular maintenance of the crane will ensure the crane is in good working condition, and this will ensure the flawless operation of the machine and the safety of your employees.
2. The slings and attachments should be well secured
Poor securing of the slings that lift the objects is among the leading causes of crane accidents. If the slings are not well secured, the load can get off balance or slip out and tip, and finally it will crash on the ground below. Thus, if the crane uses a hook latch, ensure that it is completely closed before you commence moving the crane. The attachment for the crane should be of the proper size, and it should be securely seated in the hook saddle before it is moved. Failing to do this can cause the attachment to get disconnected, which will naturally result in disaster.
3. Ensure the load is not obstructed
The weight must be moved straight into the air before turning it in any lateral direction. Ensure that nothing clings under the burden. If cables or other objects adhere to it, they put additional weight on the crane.
4. Ensure the employees understand the risks
When operating the crane machine, all employees in the area should know that they are in a danger zone. Install the “Hoist Danger” sign around the working areas to warn all the employees that the crane is being operated over their heads. The employees should stay clear of the crane and avoid walking under the load.
While operating a crane, it is imperative for you and others around you to understand the risks involved in running and being around the machine. So, as an operator, be keen while doing your work. And if you need a crane, always select a reputable dealer such as ProservCrane.
